LOMPOC POPS
PRESS RELEASE

By Connie Barlow

The red, white and blue will be taking center stage as the Lompoc Pops Orchestra honors the victims of 9/11 with a program of stirring patriotic music on Monday evening, September 11th beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Lompoc’s First United Methodist Church.

The Vandenberg Air Force Color Guard will begin followed by “The Armed Forces Salute,” “Hail to the Spirit of Liberty March,” “The Midway March,” and other favorites.

In response to many patron requests, there will be a special piano solo rendition of “Rhapsody In Blue” by Matthew Harikian. Matthew is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in both piano performance and music theory at The University of Minnesota. Public performances have included solo recitals in Fresno and Turlock, CA as well as Concerto appearances with the St. Olaf College and University High School orchestras. He has earned top prizes from the MMTA Young Artist college piano division and the Schubert Club undergraduate piano division. In addition to pursuing his Bachelor’s at St. Olaf College, Matthew spent a semester participating in a contract study at the Musikhochschule, in Lubeck, Germany.

The second half of the program will feature well-known American classics in a “Salute to the Big Apple” along with selections from the musical “South Pacific.”
