LOMPOC POPS ORCHESTRA
PRESS RELEASE

MARCH 2019
By Connie Barlow

The Lompoc Pops Orchestra returns for its spring concert on Monday evening at 7:30 pm, April 8th at Lompoc’s First United Methodist Church (925 North F Street).

Under the watchful eye and direction of Dr. Brian Asher Alhadeff, the 45-piece orchestra is composed of many of the Central Coast's finest musicians and is dedicated to providing its audiences with music that has been cherished and beloved over the decades. This concert will be no exception.

Incorporating a distinct Tango theme, the evening showcases a trio of tangos and dancers performing “Gliding Girl Tango”, “El Choclo Tango,” and “Blue Tango”. Dr. Alhadeff has also added “Maleguena Blast”, arranged by local Rob Newcomb, probably the most recognizable Spanish tune in history. But the evening also includes selections from “Jesus Christ, Superstar,” a medley from “Chicago,” and “Strings on Fire” by Henry Mancini.

Sharon Cooper, the Lompoc Pops concert master will be featured performing the incredibly beautiful “Meditation from Thais”  - a theme song that has appeared in many movie and television productions including “As Time Goes By”, and The Jack Benny program.

“The Pops” as it is most commonly known, is dedicated to keeping alive the rich American musical heritage that has been a part of the live entertainment world for decades. Thus, one is likely to hear a wide variety of music including various Broadway hits, great American musicals, well-known jazz pieces, Big Band favorites, popular television and movie themes, Western classics, beloved patriotic compositions and even gospel selections.  An evening at The Pops may also include an occasional operatic aria or a short but well-known classical selection. And . . . the conductor always welcomes patron requests that much of the audience would likewise enjoy.
